A beautiful morning at the soon-to-be Veterans Memorial Park.

In a meaningful tribute to Chico’s veterans, the Chico Area Recreation and Park District (CARD) will officially rename Wildwood Park to Veterans Memorial Park on Veterans Day, November 11, 2024. The renaming follows a successful petition led by the Veterans of Chico and was unanimously approved by CARD’s Board of Directors. This initiative honors the service and sacrifice of local veterans while providing a dedicated, accessible space for future community events and veteran gatherings.

Past Commander for Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1555, Larry Wahl, who championed the petition stated, “Changing the name of Wildwood Park to Veterans Memorial Park is a tribute to the men and women who have honorably served our country, reminding us of their sacrifice and dedication. For the veterans in our community, this recognition holds deep meaning—it’s not just a park, but a symbol of our gratitude and respect for those who have fought to preserve our freedoms. It stands as a lasting legacy, ensuring future generations never forget the cost of our liberty."

The Veterans of Chico selected Wildwood Park for its ease of access, thanks to paved roads, ample parking, and public transportation options. The park’s features make it an ideal venue for veteran-related gatherings and celebrations. Local veteran organizations, including Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, AMVETS, and Disabled American Veterans, have expressed their support for this significant change.

"We are proud to rename this park as a tribute to the veterans who have served our country so selflessly," said Dave Donnan, Vice Chairman of the CARD Boad of Directors. "Veterans Memorial Park will stand as a reminder of the dedication and bravery of the men and women who have defended our nation."

Annabel Grimm, CARD General Manager, emphasized the significance of this change: “We are proud to create a dedicated space where veterans and the broader community can come together to honor those who have served. Veterans Memorial Park will provide a welcoming and peaceful environment for reflection, remembrance, and celebration.”
