Fragrant Roses in the Creekside Rose Garden

Join expert rosarian Gwen from the Butte Rose Society for this free event! Learn about different rose scents and how we experience them. Perfect for anyone looking to add fragrant roses to their garden!

Gwen grew up in Sydney, Australia where her family home had an extensive garden that included Peace and Crimson Glory roses. She now grows both of these roses in Chico. Gwen studied agricultural science at Sydney University, majoring in soil microbiology. She had a variety of careers, mostly as a science educator. She retired to Chico in 2008, joined the Butte Rose Society and is now a consulting rosarian. She helped establish and still supports the Creekside Rose Garden at the Chico Area Recreation District center.

The Creekside Rose Garden has more than 150 roses, many of them fragrant, including some winners of the American Rose Society fragrance award.

Come and smell the roses!

Gwen will discuss:

• Why some roses have glorious blooms, but disappointingly mild perfume

• How rose breeders have improved fragrance in newer rose varieties

• What affects the character and intensity of rose perfume

• Different rose scents and how individuals experience fragrances

If you want to add fragrant roses to your garden, don’t miss this program!
