Chico Peppers Field Dedication to Honor Legendary Women’s Softball Team

April 16, 2025

Chico Peppers Field Dedication, April 26 at Hooker Oak Park, 2:00 PM. Celebrating Chico's legendary women's softball team.

The Chico Area Recreation & Park District (CARD) is proud to announce a special community celebration honoring Chico’s iconic women’s fastpitch softball team, the Chico Peppers. On Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 2:00 PM, CARD will host the official dedication of Chico Peppers Field at Hooker Oak Park.

Founded in 1962, the Chico Peppers blazed a trail in women’s athletics, competing until 2005 and leaving a profound impact on the local sports community. Known for their exceptional talent, sportsmanship, and connection to Chico, the Peppers were composed of local athletes and standout players from Chico State. Their success was amplified under the leadership of Coach Joan Wallace, who joined the team in 1967 and helped elevate their performance and legacy.

Recognizing their achievements and contributions to women’s sports, the CARD Board of Directors voted unanimously on January 23, 2025, to rename the main field at Hooker Oak Park in their honor.

The April 26 dedication event will include remarks from local dignitaries and community members, as well as tributes from former players. Confirmed speakers include CARD General Manager Annabel Grimm, a representative from Assemblyman James Gallagher’s office, and a presentation of a Letter of Recognition from California Secretary of State Dr. Shirley Weber. The City of Chico has also provided a Proclamation for this momentous occasion.

In addition to honoring the Peppers, the event will feature appearances from team alumnae, Chico Little League, and community leaders. Food trucks will be on-site, making it a festive and family-friendly afternoon for all.

This free event is open to the public, and community members are encouraged to attend and help celebrate a team that helped shape Chico’s sports history.
