Tribute to Local WWII Hero Claudine Rushton at Veterans Memorial Park
January 30, 2025

On Friday, January 31st at 4:00 PM, a special tribute will be held at Veterans Memorial Park to honor Claudine Rae Rushton and other local Rosie the Riveter veterans. The event will mark the future site of a pocket Rosie the Riveter Memorial Rose Garden— a symbol of strength, dedication, and the invaluable contributions of women who served during World War II. The tribute is open to the public, and all are invited to celebrate the legacy of these extraordinary women.
Mayor Kasey Reynolds has been the driving force behind the initiative and will share reflections on her grandmother Claudine's profound impact on the community.
"I am so proud of my grandmother and all that she accomplished throughout her life," said Mayor Reynolds. "She served her country with strength and dedication as a Rosie the Riveter and built a legacy of resilience that continues to inspire generations. This tribute is a small token of gratitude for her service and the values she instilled in all of us."

Annabel Grimm, Chico Area Recreation and Park District General Manager shared, "It’s an honor to celebrate such a celebrated community member like Claudine. Veterans Memorial Park is a special place, and adding this rose garden will serve as a lasting tribute to the contributions of the women during that time not only to our country but the Chico community."
The future rose garden, the centerpiece of this tribute, celebrates Claudine Rushton, who turned 100 years old on January 29 and was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for her service. The event will also reflect on her remarkable life, which includes raising seven children, contributing to the war effort, and being an active community member in Chico for decades.
The event is open to the public, and all are welcome to attend as we honor this local hero and her enduring legacy.
